Reopening of borders to international students
NSW: A pilot plan that will see the phased return of fully vaccinated international students to NSW has been supported by the Commonwealth Government, with the first flight touching down by the end of this year. However, only students fully vaccinated with one of four COVID-19 vaccines approved by the Therapeutic Good Administration (TGA) — Pfizer, AstraZeneca, Johnson & Johnson, or Moderna — will be able to participate in the program. Eligible students will be sent an invitation by their education provider.
Participating education providers will contact students to progress an expression of interest for the pilot plan.
Accommodation provider Scape will house the returning students for a 14-day quarantine in Redfern. It can accommodate up to 650 students to COVID Safe standards approved by NSW Health and NSW Police.
You may be able to return to Australia if you have been nominated by your education institution under an approved International Student Arrival Plan.
Initially, International Student Arrival Plans will prioritize the return of continuing higher education students to complete their qualifications. This includes final year students who need to complete practical placements and higher degree research students. Priority will be given to Ph.D. students, those who have nearly completed degrees, and students studying medicine and health-related courses.
Nomination of students
State and territory governments will determine which education institutions and students can take part in an International Student Arrival Plan.
Education institutions will identify international students who may be eligible to return to Australia under an approved plan.
If you are holding a student visa and currently overseas, what should you do?
You should contact your education provider to find out more information and discuss if you can be included in an International Student Arrival Plan. Your education provider will be able to provide more advice and will notify you if you have been approved for return and provided a travel exemption.
