TEMPORARY GRADUATE VISA (TR 485)

Temporary Graduate Visa (subclass 485), usually known as TR, lets you (international students) work and live in Australia temporarily after you have finished your studies. Holding this visa, you can travel, work, and study in Australia.

​Graduates are only able to apply for the Temporary Graduate Visa (subclass 485) once as a primary applicant. The visa can only be applied within 6 months after finishing your course.

Two-year extension of Temporary Graduate visa

The Government has extended post-study work rights to give eligible international higher education graduates with select qualifications an additional two years on their Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485).

Post-study work rights for select degrees in areas of verified skill shortages will be increased from:

  • Two years to four years for select Bachelor degrees

  • Three years to five years for select Masters degrees

  • Four years to six years for all doctoral qualifications

All doctoral studies are considered eligible for the measure, regardless of field of study and so are not listed individually.

  • all doctoral graduates (AQF level 10) are eligible for an additional period of stay from 4 years to 6 years

The Government has also announced that the allowable work hours cap for international students on 1 July 2023 will be raised from its previous level of 40 hours per fortnight to the new level of 48 hours per fortnight.

 

This revised cap will help international students to support themselves through their studies while maintaining study as the primary purpose of their visa.

Temporary Graduate visa Replacement stream​​

​​The Replacement stream of the Temporary Graduate visa applications will open from 1 July 2022 for current and former Temporary Graduate visa holders impacted by COVID-19 international travel restrictions.​​

You may be eligible for TR 485 Replacement visa, if,

  1. Applicant must submit the application before 1 January 2027

  2. TR 485 granted before 15 December 2021 AND,

  3. In effect on OR, after 1 February 2020 AND,

  4. If applicant was outside Australia, when the first visa was granted:

    • the applicant must have entered Australia on a day on which the first visa was in effect and that occurred before 15 December 2021

    • the applicant must have later departed Australia on a day on which the first visa was in effect and that occurred before 15 December 2021

  5. If applicant was in Australia, the applicant must have been outside of Australia for ANY period during this time (1 February 2020 - 14 December 2021(have lost time on your visa because of Australia’s COVID-19 travel restrictions)

​Removal of ''Occupation Nomination'' and ''Skills Assessment" requirements

(Graduate Work Stream)

The requirement to nominate an occupation from the skilled occupation list and obtain a skills assessment will be removed for Temporary Graduate visa Graduate Work stream applications from 1 July 2022 to 30 June 2023.

TR replacement Visa

Temporary Graduate Visa (TR 485) period is now 3 Years for Master graduates

  • Temporary Graduate (subclass 485) Visa Period Extend to 3 years for Master by Coursework (previously was 2 years), and

  • Extended to 2 Years for VET courses (previously was 18 months)

Applicable for international students who have graduated with skills and qualifications that relate to an occupation on the Skilled Occupation List released by the Department of Home Affairs. 

A visa granted in this stream will be (usually) valid for 24 months. (previously was 18 months) (This change will be in place until further notice)

Applicable for international students who graduate with an eligible qualification, and have applied for and were granted their first Student Visa to Australia on or after 5 November 2011.

A visa​ granted in this stream will be valid for two to four years, depending on the visa applicant's qualification.
