Face Masks will be Mandatory 

in Metropolitan Melbourne and Mitchell Shire 

Update on wearing mask or face covering

Victorian Government has announced that people who live in metropolitan Melbourne or Mitchell Shire must wear a face covering when leaving home, effective from 11.59pm on Wednesday 22 July 2020.

Going out of home is strictly limited only for the following reasons: 

  • Shopping for food and supplies

  • Care and caregiving

  • Exercise and outdoor recreation

  • Study and work – if impossible to be done from home

The only reasons for metropolitan Melbourne and Mitchell Shire residents to not wear a face covering:

  • People with medical reasons

  • Children under the age of 12

  • People with professional reasons because it stops you from doing your job 

  • If it's not practical, for example when running. However, face covering must be used before and after exercise.

  • People working in childcare

  • Anyone entering the bank

Not wearing or carrying a face covering will result in $200 fine.

Outside metropolitan Melbourne and Mitchell Shire

Residents of metropolitan Melbourne or Mitchell Shire who need to travel outside these areas must put on face covering for the entire travel period.

Those who live outside metropolitan Melbourne and Mitchell Shire must wear face covering when visiting metropolitan Melbourne or Mitchell Shire.

Wearing face covering is also recommended in your local area if you cannot keep 1.5 metres from others.

If you live outside metropolitan Melbourne and Mitchell Shire, there are only 3 reasons to enter: 

  • shopping for food and supplies

  • medical care and caregiving

  • study or work (if impossible to be done from home)
