Onshore visa hopping will also be severely restricted, and hence after the December 2023 announcement and Migration overhaul plan by the Immigration Minister, schools and Universities also have raised their bars on student visa acceptance. Several schools have dropped down to Level 2 from Level 1 and to Level 3 from Level 2.

Student Visa Grants/Refusals

26 October 2023 update

Strong growth has continued in Student visa lodgments as well as an increase in the number of Student visa holders in Australia since the border has opened up post pandemic.

Unfortunately, along with Grants there were also rejection and the volume of non-genuine and fraudulent activity has also increased.  Rejection rate for Student Visa for Higher Studies were less than 2% whereas student visa rejection rate for Vocational Education sector were a staggering 30.91%. The overall rejection rate now reached a new high of 18%; highest in the last decade.

Should you be worried? Not necessarily, if you are a genuine applicant and have necessary documents ready. But, you need to be wary of the changes and recent updates. Also student visa application process is presumably to have a reform. Australia's Department of Home Affairs is making big changes to the student visa system. One of them is planning to replace the Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) with the Genuine Student Test (GST). Even though the details are still being worked out, kids and schools need to get ready for these changes.

Migration
If you do wish to Migrate to Australia, you need to be aware of Skills Assessment. To apply for Skilled Migration in Australia, you need to have positive Skills Assessment in your nominated occupation.

It is comparatively more challenging to attain a skills assessment if your nominated occupation is in the Short-Term Occupation list compared to that of Medium to Long Term Occupation List.

What is a positive Skills Assessment?
Your Skills (sometimes includes Degree + Work experience) must be accredited by an Australian Skills Assessing body and you must have a positive outcome before applying for Skilled Migration in Australia.

Following are example of few of the most popular Skills Assessment bodies in Australia:

  • AACA – Architects Accreditation Council of Australia, Inc

  • AASW – Australian Association of Social Workers

  • CPA - Chartered Public Accountants

  • TRA – Trades Recognition Australia

  • VETASSESS – Vocational Education and Training Assessment Services

Few occupations require Work experience in your post qualification whereas for other occupations, a degree is sufficient enough. For example, IT Graduates need a 1 Year Full time work experience or, a Professional Year Degree along with their Australian Bachelor/Master degree.

There is scope to attain a Migration Skills assessment through an eligible diploma course. However, you need to be wary of the course and school that you choose and Skills assessment criterion may vary depending on what you choose.
