Working Holiday Visa Australia for Indonesian Citizens (Subclass 462)

The Work and Holiday visa (subclass 462) lets Indonesian citizens aged 18–30 live, work, and travel in Australia for up to 12 months. Unlike most countries, Indonesian applicants must obtain a Letter of Government Support (SDUWHV) from the Indonesian Directorate General of Immigration before lodging their visa application with DHA. The visa fee is AUD 670.

Basic Eligibility for Working Holiday Visa:

  • Must be 18 to 30 years old (inclusive)

  • Certified copy of passport (biodata page, amendment page, and visa/stamp pages on their passport), valid for at least 12 months, and any previous passports held

  • A letter of Government Support (SDUWHV

  • Evidence of valid English test score — minimum IELTS 4.5 (no band below 4), or PTE Academic 24, or TOEFL iBT 26

  • Have not previously taken part in the work and holiday program;

  • Have no dependent children who will be joining;

  • Have sufficient funds for their  maintenance during the period of initial stay in Australia (min AUD 5,000);

  • Have good health and good character;

  • Undertake medical and chest X-ray examinations

Do I need a Letter of Support?

YES. In Indonesia, you need a letter of government support from The Indonesian Directorate General of Immigration.

The SDUWHV opens annually with a set quota. Check the latest opening date directly via the Indonesian Directorate General of Immigration: @ditjen_imigrasi or sduwhv.imigrasi.go.id

What documents do you need for SDUWHV?

  • Recent photo with white background

  • Passport valid for at least 12 months

  • Valid English test certificate

  • Proof of education — degree/diploma, or active student letter + transcripts semester 1–4 + student ID (combined in one PDF, max 10MB)

  • Proof of funds minimum AUD 5,000 (if from parents: family card, parent's ID, notarised letter)

  • Surat Pernyataan Keabsahan Dokumen (notarised document authenticity statement)

How to apply — Step by Step for Indonesians

Step 1: Check your eligibility Confirm you meet all requirements — aged 18–30, hold a tertiary qualification or 2 years of undergraduate study, and have not previously entered Australia on a subclass 462 or 417 visa.

Step 2: Complete your English test Book and sit your English test. You need a minimum IELTS 4.5 (no band below 4), or equivalent. Results must be valid at the time of application.

Step 3: Apply for your SDUWHV Apply online at sduwhv.imigrasi.go.id when the annual intake opens. Prepare all required documents including your English test result, education proof, and proof of funds. Without a valid SDUWHV, DHA will not process your visa application.

Step 4: Gather your visa documents Once you have your SDUWHV, prepare your full document set — passport, English test result, education documents, proof of funds (min AUD 5,000), and health examination results if completed.

Step 5: Lodge your visa application Apply online through ImmiAccount at online.immi.gov.au. You must apply from outside Australia.

Step 6: Complete health examination If DHA requests a health examination after lodgement, complete it within the specified timeframe to avoid delays.

Step 7: Wait for visa decision DHA will notify you in writing. Do not book travel to Australia until you receive written confirmation that your visa has been granted.

Working Holiday Visa Options

The subclass 462 has three visa options depending on how many times you've visited Australia on a WHV before. Most Indonesian first-timers will apply for the First Working Holiday Visa.

First Working Holiday visa

Period: 12 Months

This visa lets people 18 to 30 years old (inclusive)- have their first extended holiday in Australia and work here to help fund their trip.

  • ​​​You must have a passport from an eligible country or jurisdiction

  • You can work while you are here

  • You can apply for a second Working Holiday visa if you meet certain eligibility criteria

Second Working Holiday visa

Period: 12 Months

This visa lets people 18 to 30 years old (inclusive) - who currently hold, or who have held, a Working Holiday visa, have a second working holiday in Australia.

  • ​​​​You must have a passport from an eligible country or jurisdiction

  • You can do any kind of work while you are here

  • You must have completed 3 months of specified work while holding your first Work and Holiday (subclass 462) visa

  • You can apply for a third Working Holiday visa if you meet certain eligibility criteria

Third Working Holiday visa

This visa lets people 18 to 30 years old (inclusive) - who currently hold, or who have held, a second Working Holiday visa, have a third working holiday in Australia.

  • ​​​You must have a passport from an eligible country/jurisdiction

  • You can do any kind of work while you are here

  • You must have completed 6 months of specified work while holding your second Work and Holiday (subclass 462) visa

Working Holiday Visa Extension

If your Working Holiday Visa is expiring, you may or may not be able to extend to another Working Holiday Visa depending on your eligibility

You may have 3 options to choose from if you want to extend your stay in Australia.

1. Apply for a second/third Working holiday Visa depending on your eligibility

2. Apply for a Student Visa

3. Apply for a Tourist Visa

You may have a lot of study options including English Courses and 6 months to 1-year diploma courses.

You may have a lot of options to choose from including $5500 Diploma courses for 1 year to Masters level courses.

FAQ

Do I need a skills assessment for the Indonesia WHV?

No. A skills assessment is not required for the subclass 462.

Can I include my partner or family in my WHV application?

No. You must apply on your own. Family members cannot be included in a subclass 462 application.

What happens if the SDUWHV quota is full?

You cannot apply for the subclass 462 without a valid SDUWHV. If the annual quota is exhausted, you will need to wait for the next intake. Monitor announcements via @ditjen_imigrasi on Instagram for the opening date each year.

Can I work full-time on a WHV?

Yes. You have full work rights with no restriction on occupation. You can generally work for the same employer for up to 6 months.

Can I study while on a WHV?

Yes, up to 4 months (17 weeks). If your main purpose is to stay and study, a Student visa is more appropriate.

What if my SDUWHV application is rejected?

If your SDUWHV is not approved, you cannot proceed with the subclass 462 visa application. Contact a MARA-registered migration agent to explore alternative visa options for working or studying in Australia.
