Working Holiday Visa Australia (Subclass 417 and 462)

Working Holiday Maker Visa Update

Working Holiday Makers in Australia can work in any occupation or industry while in Australia, generally for up to 6 ​months with one employer. But this visa condition 8547 is temporarily relaxed and below timeframe applies.

Visa condition 8547

From 19 January 2022 to 30 June 2023, WHMs working in any sector anywhere in Australia may continue to work for the same employer or organisation for longer than 6 months without requesting permission.

Other Visas (Australian Border)

All fully vaccinated visa holders (including: student visa, tourist visa, working holiday visa etc.) will be able to travel to Australia without needing to apply for a travel exemption.

Working Holiday Visa (WHV)

Working Holiday Visa is for young adults who want an extended holiday and to work here to fund it.

Basic Eligibility for Working Holiday Visa:

  • Must be 18 to 30 years old (inclusive) - except for Canadian, French and Irish citizens, Danish (new inclusion), Italian (new inclusion) up to 35 (inclusive)

  • Must have a passport from an eligible country or jurisdiction

  • Must not be accompanied by dependent children

First Working Holiday visa

Period: 12 Months

This visa lets people 18 to 30 years old (inclusive) - and Canadian, French, and Irish citizens 18 to 35 years old (inclusive) - have their first extended holiday in Australia and work here to help fund their trip.

  • ​​​You must have a passport from an eligible country or jurisdiction

  • You can work while you are here

  • You can apply for a second Working Holiday visa if you meet certain eligibility criteria

  • If in the below list, there is no annual cap mentioned, that means there's no limit or cap for that country.

  • The passport holders of countries listed with Green are eligible to apply for subclass 417 whereas the ones in yellow are eligible to apply for subclass 462.

  • In addition to the table below, an additional 1400 places will be allocated each year to Hungary, Austria and Slovak Republic. (This allocation is excluded from the table below)

  • For 2022-23 only, the caps will increase to 30% more than which was initially allocated. Find the latest allocation below:

Second Working Holiday visa

Period: 12 Months

This visa lets people 18 to 30 years old (inclusive) - and Canadian, French, and Irish citizens 18 to 35 years old (inclusive) - who currently hold, or who have held, a Working Holiday visa, have a second working holiday in Australia.

  • ​​​​You must have a passport from an eligible country or jurisdiction

  • You can do any kind of work while you are here

  • You must have completed 3 months of specified work while holding your first Working Holiday (subclass 417) visa

  • You can apply for a third Working Holiday visa if you meet certain eligibility criteria

Third Working Holiday visa

This visa lets people 18 to 30 years old (inclusive) - and Canadian, French, and Irish citizens 18 to 35 years old (inclusive) - who currently hold, or who have held, a second Working Holiday visa, have a third working holiday in Australia.

  • ​​​You must have a passport from an eligible country/jurisdiction

  • You can do any kind of work while you are here

  • You must have completed 6 months of specified work while holding your second 417 visa or a bridging visa in certain circumstances

Working Holiday Visa Extension

If your Working Holiday Visa is expiring, you may or may not be able to extend to another Working Holiday Visa depending on your eligibility

You may have 3 options to choose from if you want to extend your stay in Australia.

1. Apply for a second/third Working holiday Visa depending on your eligibility

2. Apply for a Student Visa

3. Apply for a Tourist Visa

You may have a lot of study options including English Courses and 6 months to 1-year diploma courses.

You may have a lot of options to choose from including $5500 Diploma courses for 1 year to Masters level courses.

  • Other Trade and Hospitality courses (Painting, Construction, Carpentry, Cookery etc.)
