MIGRATION SKILLS ASSESSMENT

To apply for permanent residency, you need to have a positive skills assessment for you nominated occupation. It is comparatively more challenging to attain a skills assessment if your nominated occupation is in the Short-Term Occupation list compared to that of Medium to Long Term Occupation List.

What is a positive Skills Assessment?
A skill assessment is a process where a relevant skill assessing authority evaluates if your skills and qualifications meet the standards they set for a specific occupation. This assessment is often required for individuals applying for various Australian visas, such as General Skilled Migration (GSM) visas, Employer Sponsored visas, Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visas, and Temporary Graduate visas (subclass 485).

Your Skills (sometimes including Degree + Work experience) must be accredited by an Australian Skills Assessing body and you must have a positive outcome before applying for Skilled Migration in Australia.

Following are examples of few of the most popular Skills Assessment bodies in Australia:

  • AACA – Architects Accreditation Council of Australia, Inc

  • AASW – Australian Association of Social Workers

  • CPA - Chartered Public Accountants

  • TRA – Trades Recognition Australia

  • VETASSESS – Vocational Education and Training Assessment Services

Few occupations require Work experience in your post qualification whereas, for other occupations, a degree is sufficient enough. For example, IT Graduates need a 1 Year Full-time work experience or, a Professional Year Degree along with their Australian Bachelor/Master degree.
