The 407 Training Visa does not lead directly to permanent residency. But it can be the first step in a structured pathway that does, through the 482 Skills in Demand Visa and then the 186 Employer Nomination Scheme Visa.
This article explains how the 407 visa to PR Australia pathway works, what you need to meet at each stage, and what can go wrong along the way.

Why Applicants Start With the 407 Training Visa
Most applicants who begin on the 407 Training Visa do so because they do not yet meet the work experience requirements for employer-sponsored visas like the 482.
The 407 solves that gap. It lets you build genuine, structured work experience in your nominated occupation under an approved sponsor — experience that directly supports your eligibility for the 482 later.
Think of the 407 as the foundation. The 482 and 186 are built on top of it.
Stage 1 — 407 Training Visa
Purpose: Build work experience and establish a relationship with an Australian employer.
Duration: Up to 2 years.
What you need to focus on during this stage:
Your goal on the 407 is not just to complete your training program. It is to position yourself for the 482 transition. That means:
Training in an occupation that sits on the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL) — because your occupation must be on the CSOL to qualify for the 482
Building a strong working relationship with your sponsor — because your employer needs to be willing to sponsor you for the 482 after training ends
Checking skills assessment requirements early — some occupations require a skills assessment for the 482 or 186, even though the 407 itself does not. If your occupation needs one, start the process before your 407 ends
Key risk at this stage: Training in an occupation that is not on the CSOL. If your occupation does not appear on the CSOL when you finish your 407, you cannot transition to the 482 Core Skills stream. Check the list before you start, not after.
Stage 2 — 482 Skills in Demand Visa
Purpose: Transition from training to genuine skilled employment with a PR pathway.
Duration: Up to 4 years.
What you need to qualify:
Your occupation must be on the CSOL
You must have at least 1 year of work experience in your nominated occupation — experience gained on the 407 counts toward this
You must meet the Core Skills Income Threshold (CSIT) of $73,150 per year
Your employer must be an approved Standard Business Sponsor and willing to nominate you
You must meet English, health, and character requirements
Skills assessment — required for some occupations, not all. Check your occupation's assessment authority early
What changes from the 407:
On the 407, your work rights are limited to your nominated training program. On the 482, you work as a fully employed skilled worker. Your salary must meet the CSIT, and your role must reflect the genuine duties of your nominated occupation.
Key risk at this stage: Your employer decides not to sponsor you for the 482 after your 407 ends. This is the most common point of failure in this pathway. Have an honest conversation with your employer about their intentions before your 407 expires, not in the final weeks.
If your original sponsor will not continue, you have options. You can find a new approved employer willing to sponsor you for the 482, as long as you hold a valid visa at the time you lodge.
Stage 3 — 186 Employer Nomination Scheme Visa
Purpose: Permanent residency through employer sponsorship.
Type: Permanent visa.
The most common route from the 482 — Temporary Residence Transition (TRT) Stream:
To qualify for the 186 TRT stream you must:
Hold or have held a 482 or 457 visa
Have worked for your sponsoring employer for at least 2 years in your nominated occupation
Be nominated by your employer for the same or a closely related occupation
Meet the CSIT of $73,150 per year
Be under 45 years of age at the time of application
Meet skills assessment, English, health, and character requirements
The 2-year employment period: The clock starts from when your 482 nomination is lodged, not when your visa is granted. Time spent with multiple approved employers can count, as long as the roles are in the same nominated occupation.
If you change employers during your 482, you have up to 180 days to find a new sponsor. That period does not count toward your 2-year employment requirement for the 186 TRT stream.
Key risk at this stage: Age. If you turn 45 before you lodge your 186 application, you are no longer eligible for the TRT stream. Factor your age into your timeline from the very beginning of this pathway.
Full Timeline — What to Expect
This pathway takes time. Here is a realistic picture:
407 Training Visa: Up to 2 years
482 Skills in Demand Visa: Up to 4 years, but you need at least 2 years of employment before you can lodge the 186 TRT
186 ENS Visa processing: Varies — can take 12 months or more
Realistically, you are looking at a minimum of 3 to 4 years from starting the 407 to holding permanent residency. Plan your timeline, your age, and your occupation eligibility from day one.
What Can Go Wrong — and How to Avoid It
Your occupation leaves the CSOL Occupation lists change. An occupation on the CSOL today may not be there in two years. Monitor the list throughout your 407 and 482, and speak to a migration agent if your occupation comes under review.
Your employer will not sponsor you This is the most common failure point. Do not assume your sponsor will continue supporting you. Confirm their intentions early and in writing where possible.
You miss the age threshold The 186 TRT stream has a 45-year age cap. If you are in your early 40s when you start this pathway, do the maths on whether you can complete all three stages before you hit that limit.
Your skills assessment is delayed Some assessment bodies take months to process applications. If your occupation requires a skills assessment for the 482 or 186, lodge it early — ideally while you are still on the 407.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the 407 visa count as work experience for the 482?
Yes. Work experience gained during your 407 Training Visa counts toward the 1-year work experience requirement for the 482 Skills in Demand Visa.
How long does the 407 to PR pathway take?
A minimum of 3 to 4 years. The 407 runs up to 2 years, and you need at least 2 years of employment on the 482 before you qualify for the 186 TRT stream.
Can I change employers during the 482 and still qualify for the 186?
Yes. Time with multiple approved employers in the same nominated occupation can count toward the 2-year requirement. If you leave an employer, you have 180 days to find a new sponsor.
Do I need a skills assessment for this pathway?
The 407 does not require one. The 482 and 186 may require one depending on your occupation. Check your occupation's assessment authority early in the process.
Is there an age limit for the 186 visa?
Yes. You must be under 45 at the time you lodge your 186 application under the TRT stream. Some exemptions apply — speak to a registered migration agent if you are close to this threshold.
What happens if my occupation is removed from the CSOL?
You may not be able to transition to the 482 Core Skills stream. A migration agent can advise on alternative pathways depending on your situation.
