If you're considering applying for a Skilled Migration Visa and want to claim an extra 5 points for regional study, it’s crucial to understand the eligibility criteria thoroughly. While the process may seem straightforward, the fine print is important. Here's a breakdown of what you need to know to claim those 5 valuable points.
Understanding the Regional Study Requirement
To be eligible for the extra 5 points under the Australian immigration system, you must meet specific criteria outlined by the Department of Home Affairs. The key question asked by the points calculator is:
"Do you have at least one degree, diploma, or trade qualification from an Australian educational institution that satisfies the Australian study requirement, obtained while living and studying in an eligible area of regional Australia?"
This question seems simple, but there are specific conditions you need to meet to claim the extra points.
Four Key Requirements to Qualify for the 5 Points
To claim the 5 points for regional study, you must meet all four of the following conditions at the time of invitation:
1. Australian Study Requirement
Your qualification must meet the Australian study requirement. This means the course must be CRICOS-registered and completed in Australia.
2. Location of the Campus
You must have attended a campus located in an eligible regional area as per the Department’s regional designation. Regional areas include locations outside major cities like Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane.
3. Living in a Designated Regional Area
You must have lived in a designated regional area for the duration of your study. The time you spend in major cities won’t count, so ensure you are residing in a regional area while studying.
4. No Distance Education
The study you undertake cannot include distance education. To meet the criteria, your studies must be completed through on-campus learning in the regional area.
