Australia PR Points Calculator for 189, 190 and 491 Visas

Last Updated: 31 Aug 2026

Use this Australia PR points calculator to estimate your score for the skilled migration points test. The points test applies to the Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189), the Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190) and the Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491).

You need at least 65 points to be invited to apply, according to the Department of Home Affairs. Reaching 65 points does not guarantee an invitation. Many occupations are invited at higher scores.

Subclass 189 and 190 are permanent residence visas. Subclass 491 is a provisional visa, but it can lead to permanent residence through the Permanent Residence (Skilled Regional) visa (subclass 191).

What This Calculator Helps You Check

The calculator estimates your points for the three main PR pathways under the points test:

It scores the same factors the Department of Home Affairs uses: age, English, skilled employment, education, Australian study, partner skills and state or regional nomination. Not sure which visa suits you? Read our guide to the differences between 189, 190 and 491.

Quick Answer: How Many Points Do You Need for PR in Australia?

You need at least 65 points to receive an invitation for a 189, 190 or 491 visa.

A higher score improves your chance of being invited, especially for occupations with strong competition.

Key points at a glance:

  • Minimum score: 65 points

  • Highest age points: 30 points (age 25 to 32)

  • English: Proficient = 10 points, Superior = 20 points

  • State nomination (190): 5 points

  • State or regional nomination (491): 15 points

  • After an invitation: 60 days to lodge your visa application

Your chance of invitation may depend on:

  • your occupation

  • your total points score

  • your visa subclass

  • state or territory nomination rules

  • available places

  • invitation rounds or nomination priorities

You may be able to claim:

  • 10 points for Proficient English

  • 5 years may give 10 points

  • 8 years may give 15 points

For Australian skilled employment:

  • 1 year may give 5 points

  • 10 points if you are single, or your partner is an Australian citizen or permanent resident

  • 5 points if your partner has Competent English and is included in the same visa application

Nomination Points

Subclass 190 may give 5 points if you are nominated by a state or territory government and the nomination has not been withdrawn.

Subclass 491 may give 15 points if you have eligible regional nomination or eligible family sponsorship.

If you are choosing between these two pathways, read RACC’s guide: 190 Visa vs 491 Visa.

Skills Assessment

For points-tested skilled visas, you generally need a suitable skills assessment for your nominated occupation.

Important:

  • Your skills assessment must be suitable for your nominated occupation.

  • It must meet the requirements for the visa pathway.

  • A subclass 485 provisional skills assessment is not suitable for a points-tested skilled visa application.

  • If no validity period is shown, Home Affairs states that a skills assessment is valid for 3 years from the date of issue.

EOI and SkillSelect

Before you can be invited, you submit an Expression of Interest through SkillSelect.

Your EOI is not a visa application.

SkillSelect gives an indicative points score based on your claims. If you are invited, you must prove the points you claimed with documents.

A subclass 485 provisional skills assessment is not suitable for a points-tested skilled visa application.
