What Is the 186 Direct Entry Stream?
The Direct Entry stream is one of three streams under the 186 visa. Unlike the TRT stream which is for workers already in Australia on a 482 visa, the Direct Entry stream is for skilled workers applying from overseas, or from outside the 482 pathway who have not yet worked for their sponsoring employer in Australia.
Most applicants need a positive skills assessment before they apply, at least 3 years of relevant work experience, and must be under 45.
Who Is the Direct Entry Stream For?
The Direct Entry stream suits you if:
-
You are applying from overseas and have a job offer from an approved Australian employer
-
Your occupation is on the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL)
-
You have at least 3 years relevant work experience
-
You are under 45 (or qualify for an age exemption)
-
You do not hold or have not held a 482 or 457 visa with this employer
If you are already in Australia on a 482 visa, the TRT stream is usually a better fit.

186 Direct Entry Eligibility — Full Checklist
You qualify if your occupation is on the CSOL, you have a positive skills assessment and at least 3 years relevant work experience, you are under 45, and an approved Australian employer is willing to nominate you for a permanent position.
Here is the full eligibility checklist:
Eligible occupation
Your occupation must be on the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL). Occupations on the CSOL are benchmarked to the 2022 version of ANZSCO.
Skills assessment
You must have a positive skills assessment before you lodge your application. It cannot be more than 3 years old at the time you apply. Skills assessments obtained for a subclass 485 visa are not accepted.
If your occupation classification has changed through ANZSCO updates, an assessment under the earlier classification will generally be accepted if: it is still valid, the assessing authority was specified for that occupation at the time, and the nominated occupation corresponds to the historical classification.
You are exempt from the skills assessment requirement if you:
-
Are nominated as an academic (university lecturer or faculty head at Level A–E) by an Australian university
-
Are nominated as a scientist, researcher or technical specialist by an Australian government scientific agency
-
Currently hold a subclass 444 or 461 visa and have worked for the nominating employer in the nominated position for at least 2 years in the last 3 years
Work experience
Unless exempt from the skills assessment requirement, you need at least 3 years of relevant work experience in your occupation. Applicants exempt from skills assessment are also exempt from this requirement.
Licensing
Registration or membership If your occupation requires a licence, registration, or professional membership in your state or territory, you must hold it.
Nominated by an approved employer
You must be nominated by an Australian employer whose business is actively and lawfully operating. You must apply within 6 months of the nomination being approved.
If your nomination is withdrawn or the position is no longer available, DHA cannot grant your visa. A new nomination cannot be linked to your existing application — you would need to withdraw and reapply.
Age
You must be under 45 when you apply. You are exempt if:
-
Nominated as an academic (university lecturer or faculty head at Level B–E) by an Australian university
-
Nominated as a scientist, researcher or technical specialist at ANZSCO skill level 1 or 2 by a government science agency or Australian university
-
You currently hold a subclass 444 or 461 visa and have worked for the nominating employer in the nominated position for at least 2 years in the last 3 years (excluding unpaid leave)
English
At least Competent English
-
IELTS: 6.0 in each component
-
PTE Academic: 47 listening, 48 reading, 51 writing, 54 speaking
-
TOEFL iBT and OET also accepted
Test results must not be more than 3 years old at the time you apply.
Health
You and any family members applying with you must meet health requirements. DHA will contact you if examinations are needed.
Character
You and family members aged 16 or over must meet character requirements. Police certificates required.
Australian values statement
If you are 18 or older, you must have read the Life in Australia booklet and sign an Australian Values Statement.
No outstanding debts to the Australian Government
Any debt must be paid or have a formal repayment arrangement in place.
No cancelled visas or refused applications
DHA will consider your immigration history. In some circumstances you may still apply — see Limitations on applications in Australia.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the 186 Direct Entry stream?
The 186 Direct Entry stream lets skilled workers apply directly for permanent residency through employer sponsorship. Unlike the TRT stream, it does not require you to have previously held a 482 or 457 visa with your employer. Most applicants need a skills assessment and at least 3 years of relevant work experience.
Do I need a skills assessment for the 186 Direct Entry stream?
Yes, for most applicants. You must have a positive skills assessment before you lodge your application — it cannot be more than 3 years old at the time you apply. Skills assessments obtained for a subclass 485 visa are not accepted. Exemptions apply for academics, scientists, researchers, and certain NZ visa holders.
Is there an age limit for the 186 Direct Entry stream?
Yes. You must be under 45 years old when you apply. Exemptions apply if you are nominated as an academic (university lecturer or faculty head at Level B–E) by an Australian university, a scientist or researcher at ANZSCO skill level 1 or 2 by a government science agency or university, or a NZ visa holder (subclass 444 or 461) who has worked for the nominating employer for at least 2 years in the last 3 years.
How much work experience do I need?
At least 3 years of relevant work experience in your occupation, unless you are exempt from the skills assessment requirement — in which case the work experience requirement also does not apply.
Can I apply from outside Australia?
Yes. You can apply for the 186 Direct Entry stream from inside or outside Australia. If applying from inside Australia, you must hold a substantive visa or eligible bridging visa.
How long does 186 Direct Entry processing take?
Direct Entry applications typically take longer than TRT applications. As a current guide, most general applications are drawn from nominations lodged around June 2024. Check the latest figures at immi.homeaffairs.gov.au before lodging. Check the latest figures at immi.homeaffairs.gov.au before lodging. See our 186 visa processing time guide for a full breakdown.
What is the difference between Direct Entry and TRT stream?
The TRT stream is for workers already in Australia on a 482 or 457 visa who have worked for their sponsor for 2 years. The Direct Entry stream is for workers applying without a prior 482 or 457 visa relationship with the employer. Direct Entry requires a skills assessment and has an age limit of 45 — TRT generally does not require a skills assessment and has no age limit for most applicants.
Can I change employer after getting a 186 Direct Entry visa?
Yes. Once granted, the 186 visa provides permanent residency with no employment restrictions — you can work for any employer anywhere in Australia.
