1. Relevant Qualification and Skills Assessment (VETASSESS)

You must obtain a positive skills assessment for Graphic Designer through VETASSESS, the assessing authority for this occupation. Graphic Designer is a VETASSESS Group B occupation, and you can qualify through one of four pathways:

• Pathway 1 — Bachelor degree or higher in a highly relevant field (Graphic Design, Visual Communication, or Communication Design), plus at least 1 year of highly relevant post-qualification employment in the last 5 years

• Pathway 2 — Bachelor degree or higher in a field that is not highly relevant, plus an additional AQF Diploma (or higher) in a highly relevant field, plus at least 2 years of relevant post-qualification employment in the last 5 years

• Pathway 3 — Bachelor degree or higher in a field that is not highly relevant, with no additional relevant qualification, plus at least 3 years of relevant post-qualification employment in the last 5 years

• Pathway 4 — Bachelor degree or higher regardless of field, plus at least 6 years of employment at an appropriate skill level, including at least 1 year of highly relevant employment within the last 5 years

If your employment isn't post-qualification, 5 additional years of highly relevant employment are required on top of the standard pathway.

You must also submit a portfolio with your application — a link or samples of your design work, up to 5MB per sample.

2. English Language Requirement

The approved tests and pass scores changed on 7 August 2025. For a test taken on or after that date, Competent English means at least, in each of the four components:

• IELTS (Academic or General Training) — 6 for listening, reading, writing, and speaking

• PTE Academic — 47 listening, 48 reading, 51 writing, 54 speaking (note: PTE Academic scores changed with the August 2025 update — a pre-2025 result used a different scale)

• TOEFL iBT — 16 listening, 16 reading, 19 writing, 19 speaking (must be booked under "Taking TOEFL for Australia")

Citizens of Canada, New Zealand, Ireland, the UK, and the USA can use a valid passport from that country as evidence instead of a test.

Fully online or "at-home" test deliveries (including IELTS Online and TOEFL iBT Home Edition) are not accepted. A test taken on or before 6 August 2025 may still count as evidence, generally up to 3 years from the test date or until 6 August 2028, whichever applies to your visa.
