Early Childhood Teacher Skills Assessment: Transition to ACECQA Starting December 2024

Early Childhood Teacher skills assessment transition

The Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority (ACECQA) will take over the role of managing skills assessments for Early Childhood Teachers (ANZSCO 241111) from the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL), effective December 7, 2024. This is what you need to know to ensure a smooth application process going forward.

Key Information on the Early Childhood Teacher Skills Assessment body change to ACECQA

As of December 7, 2024, ACECQA will be the designated authority for all Early Childhood Teacher (ECT) skills assessments. Understanding these changes is crucial for anyone planning to apply for an ECT skills assessment.

When Does the Transition Occur?

  • Transition Date: December 7, 2024

  • Last Date for AITSL Applications: December 6, 2024, by midnight

After this transition date, all new skills assessment applications for Early Childhood Teachers must be submitted to ACECQA skills assessment authority.

What Happens to Current Applications with AITSL?

If you have already submitted your application to AITSL, your assessment will be processed by AITSL. If successful, your skills assessment remains valid for visa purposes. There is no need for reassessment by ACECQA if your AITSL certificate is still valid. AITSL assessment certificates remain valid for two years from the issue date.

Differences Between AITSL and ACECQA Qualifications

Although the qualifications for assessing Early Childhood Teachers are largely similar between AITSL and ACECQA, there are slight differences. Applicants should choose based on their timeline and readiness. If you decide to withdraw your application from AITSL before the assessment process begins, you may be eligible for a partial refund.

  1. Approved Qualifications

To meet ACECQA's requirements, applicants must hold an ACECQA nationally approved early childhood teaching (ECT) qualification or an equivalent.

Note: If you do not currently have an ACECQA-approved qualification, ACECQA will assess your qualifications under the NQF as part of a dual assessment, which may require additional evidence.

  1. English Language Proficiency

ACECQA requires applicants to meet one of the following English proficiency standards:

  • One year of full-time tertiary or higher education level study in Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Canada, the United Kingdom, or the United States.

  • An IELTS Academic score of 7.0 or higher in reading and writing, and at least 8.0 in speaking and listening, undertaken in the last 3 years.

  • ISLPR (International Second Language Proficiency Ratings) Teacher-focused assessment with Level 4 in all areas.

  • On a case-by-case basis, ACECQA may accept a professional reference from an employer in an English-speaking country.

Note: Unlike AITSL, ACECQA accepts one year of full-time tertiary study in an English-speaking country, making it easier for applicants to meet English requirements.
