A Clearer Pathway: Permanent Residency as a Data Analysts in Australia

There is now a pathway to permanent residency for Data Analysts in Australia! The occupation has been added to the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL), providing a structured pathway for PR.

The Australian Computer Society (ACS) has recognised Data Analyst (ANZSCO 224114) as an eligible occupation under its Migration Skills Assessment program. Previously, this occupation was not on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL), lacking a clear pathway to PR. The addition to the CSOL now allows Data Analysts to apply for employer-sponsored visa pathways:

  • Subclass 482 Visa – Skills in Demand Stream

  • Subclass 186 Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) – Permanent Residency Visa

These updates come as a response to Australia’s growing demand for skilled data professionals across critical sectors such as technology, healthcare, government, and finance.

Educational Requirements

To pursue a career and eventually permanent residency as a Data Analyst in Australia—you'll typically need either a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Graduate Diploma in Data Science, Information Systems, Business Analytics, or a closely related field completed at a CRICOS-registered institution.

Skills Assessment Through the Australian Computer Society (ACS)

To apply for an employer-sponsored visa, Data Analysts must first make sure their relevant qualification is recognised by the Australian Computer Society (ACS). If applying directly for the Employer Sponsored 186 (DE), you'll need a skills assessment where the ACS evaluates whether your qualifications and, if applicable, your work experience meet the Australian standard for the Data Analyst occupation.

Pathways to Permanent Residency

Depending on your professional background, there are two main migration pathways available via employer sponsored visas:

1. Subclass 482 (SID) → Subclass 186 (Temporary Residence Transition Stream)

  • A minimum of one year of relevant full-time work experience is necessary for the 482 visa

  • Applicants must be sponsored by a qualified Australian employer

  • Gaining two years of experience while holding the 482 visa can lead to permanent residency through the 186 visa (TRT stream)

2. Subclass 186 (Direct Entry Stream)

  • Requires three years of relevant experience, including international roles

  • Does not require a previous 482 visa, but requires a positive skills assessment

  • Ideal for experienced professionals applying directly for PR

Why the Inclusion of Data Analyst Occupation on CSOL Matters

  • International Graduates: Now have a direct, structured PR pathway aligned with their field of study after gaining experience in this occupation.

  • Skilled Professionals Overseas: Can access employer-sponsored migration pathways without needing to study in Australia first

  • Australian Employers: Gain access to a broader talent pool and can offer PR pathways to attract and retain data professionals in critical roles
