In Partner Visa Update April 2026, The Department of Home Affairs has clarified its current processing approach partner visa applications. If your application is incomplete at lodgement, it may be refused, with one chance to fix it.
Here is what you need to know before you lodge.
What Changed in the April 2026 Partner Visa Update
The Department has shifted to a "One-Response" approach for partner visa applications. It has identified that a significant number of applications are being submitted without complete relationship evidence.
The result: incomplete applications are now being identified early, and the Department is acting on them faster.
You will get one opportunity to respond to a Request for Information (RFI). Follow-up requests will not be issued. If your response to that RFI is still insufficient, the Department will make a decision — and that decision may be a refusal.
What "Decision Ready" Means
Decision ready means your application contains everything the Department needs to assess it from day one. You should not lodge and hope to fill in the gaps later.
At lodgement, your application must include:
Proof of identity for both the applicant and sponsor
Relationship evidence — financial, social, household, and commitment aspects, all covered
Health and character checks — completed and attached where possible
Certified documents — translations, statutory declarations, and supporting materials all correctly certified
One additional note on health and character: the Department will allow extra time to obtain these where there are genuine delays, but you must proactively advise the Department of any hold-ups. Do not wait to be asked.
The One-Response Rule
Under this updated approach, the Department will issue a single RFI if your application has gaps. That is your one chance to provide what is missing.
There will be no follow-up requests after that.
If you receive an RFI, treat it as your last opportunity. Respond in full through ImmiAccount.
ImmiAccount is the Department's preferred contact channel, emails sent to the Partner visa mailbox emails may not be prioritised and are only responded to in limited circumstances.
If ImmiAccount is unavailable, use the Partner processing enquiry form on the Department's website. Do not use multiple channels at once (for example, submitting a webform and sending an email). This creates duplicate records and delays your application further.
How to Prepare Your Relationship Evidence
Relationship evidence is the area where most applications fall short. Your evidence must cover all four aspects of a genuine relationship:
Financial: Joint bank accounts, shared expenses, property ownership or rental agreements in both names, shared financial commitments.
Household: Evidence you live together, lease agreements, utility bills, correspondence addressed to both of you at the same address.
Social: Photos together over time, statutory declarations from people who know you as a couple, shared social media presence, evidence of attending events or travel together.
Commitment: Knowledge of each other's personal history, evidence of future plans, communication records if you have spent time apart.
Update your relationship evidence regularly. The Department expects evidence to be current, aim to refresh and supplement your file every 6 to 12 months while your application is pending.
When you upload documents, label each file clearly and organise them chronologically. A well-structured application signals that it is complete and considered.
Does This Affect Your Application?
This update applies to Partner visa applications generally. If you have an application in progress, or you are preparing to lodge, review your file against these requirements now.
What This Means for You
The risk of refusal has increased for anyone who lodges an incomplete application. The Department is no longer giving applicants multiple opportunities to strengthen their case.
If you are unsure whether your application is decision ready, do not guess. The cost of a refusal in time, money, and the impact on your relationship and visa status is significant.
