As of 12 September 2025, the Department of Home Affairs has updated the procedural instructions for the Subclass 485 Temporary Graduate Visa. Higher education graduates who studied and lived in Hobart or nearby postcodes can now qualify for a Second Post-Higher Education Work (PHEW) stream visa with a two-year validity.
Key Changes for Hobart Graduates
Before this update, graduates who met the requirements for the Second PHEW stream using Hobart and nearby postcodes could only apply for a one-year Temporary Graduate Visa (TGV). However, this recent update has extended the eligibility for graduates in these areas to a two-year visa under the Second PHEW stream.
What Does This Mean for Hobart Graduates?
This change aligns Hobart with other regional areas, ensuring that all higher education graduates who meet the Second PHEW criteria and use Tasmanian postcodes are now eligible for a two-year Second TR 485 visa. This gives graduates a longer period to gain valuable work experience and enhance their qualifications in Australia.
Why It Matters
The extended validity of the Second TR 485 visa provides graduates with additional time to explore career opportunities, build professional networks, and potentially transition to permanent residency through other visa pathways.
If you’re a graduate who studied and lives in Hobart or surrounding areas, you could be eligible for the second two-year TR 485 visa. With this update, your post-study work options have just been expanded, offering a valuable opportunity to enhance your career in Australia.
