482 Visa Processing Time
2026 Guide
Last updated: 14 April 2026 · RACC Migration & Education Services
In summary: There is no fixed processing time for the 482 visa. The Department of Home Affairs assesses every application individually. The biggest factor is whether your application is decision-ready at lodgement, missing health checks, an outstanding skills assessment, or an unapproved employer nomination all add significant delays. The Specialist Skills stream receives priority processing; the Core Skills stream is assessed in order of lodgement.

Factors That Affect 482 Visa Processing Time
The Department of Home Affairs assesses applications on a case-by-case basis. Processing times can vary due to:
1. Completeness of Your Application
Whether you have lodged a complete application, including all necessary supporting documents.
This is the most controllable factor. Every missing document adds time, either waiting for the Department to request it, or waiting for you to provide it. Lodge with everything in place from day one.
2. Your Response Time to Department Requests
How quickly you respond to any requests for additional information.
If the Department requests more information during processing, delays start the moment you receive the request. Monitoring ImmiAccount regularly and responding promptly keeps your application moving.
3. Supporting Information Checks
How long it takes to perform required checks on the supporting information provided.
The Department verifies the documents and information you submit. Complex employment histories, multiple countries of residence, or unusual occupation pathways can extend this phase.
4. External Agency Checks
How long it takes to receive additional information from external agencies, particularly in relation to health, character, and national security requirements.
This is largely outside your control once lodged, but you can minimise it by completing health examinations before you apply rather than waiting for the Department to request them.
5. Health Examinations
Completing health examinations upfront significantly reduces processing time.
Health examination results are generally valid for 12 months. If you wait until the Department requests them, you add weeks to your timeline. The Department strongly recommends organising health exams before lodging your application.
6. Skills Assessment
Where a mandatory skills assessment is required, it must be commenced before you apply.
If your skills assessment is not underway at the time of lodgement, your application is invalid and will not be processed. Beyond that, the Department encourages completing the full assessment process before lodging, not just commencing it, to avoid delays during processing.
7. Employer Nomination Approval
We must have approved your employer's nomination before we can grant you a Skill In Demand visa.
If your employer's nomination is still being processed when you lodge, your visa cannot be granted until the nomination is approved. Confirm nomination status with your employer before lodging your visa application.
