Education Requirements for Psychologist (nec)
To be recognised as a psychologist in Australia, you must complete a six-year sequence of study and training. This includes:
A four-year accredited undergraduate degree in psychologyAND one of the following:
A two-year accredited postgraduate degree (such as a Masters or Doctorate), or
A 5+1 internship pathway, which includes one year of supervised practice and successful completion of the national psychology exam.
All qualifications, whether obtained in Australia or overseas, must meet the standards set by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC).
Skills Assessment Requirements for Psychologist (nec)
The Australian Psychological Society (APS) is the official assessing authority for overseas-trained psychologists under the Psychologist (nec) PR pathway. APS will evaluate whether your academic qualifications align with the APAC framework.
Applicants who already hold unconditional General Registration with AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency) may also qualify for skilled migration without requiring a separate qualification assessment.
If you have completed the approved six-year sequence of education, work experience is not required for a positive skills assessment. However, you must meet the English language proficiency standards set by the relevant visa and registration authorities.
