If your occupation isn't listed above at all, you don't need a mandatory skills assessment under this instrument — regardless of your passport country. The Department can still request one during processing if it needs to verify your qualifications or experience.

Who Is Exempt From the Mandatory Skills Assessment?

Even if your occupation and passport country both appear above, you're exempt if any of the following apply:

​

You already hold a 457 or 482 visa in the same occupation You hold a Subclass 457, Subclass 482 (TSS), or Subclass 482 (SID) visa, you met the primary criteria for that visa, and you're currently working in Australia in the nominated occupation.

​

You're being transferred from an overseas branch of the same company You work for an overseas business in the same or a similar occupation, and that business (or an associated entity) — holding standard business sponsor approval — nominates you.

​

You hold an Australian-equivalent qualification Your qualification for the occupation matches the ANZSCO-specified qualification, and you completed it in Australia or in a country not listed against your occupation above.

​

You already hold the required licence or registration Your occupation requires a licence, registration, or membership to practise, and you already hold it.

​

You've completed TRA's Offshore Skills Assessment Program You've met TRA's standards under that program for your occupation.

​

Program or Project Administrator only — high income exemption You hold a qualification commensurate with ANZSCO 511112, you'll earn at least AUD 180,000 a year, and an accredited sponsor is nominating you.

When Do You Need to Complete the Skills Assessment?

​If your occupation and passport country combination is listed above, you must commence the skills assessment before you lodge your visa application, and hold a result valid at the time of lodgement — assessments are generally valid for 3 years.
