RPL Cost in Australia - Fees, Timeline and Other Costs

There is no national price for RPL in Australia. Each Registered Training Organisation (RTO) sets its own fee. Public TAFEs publish RPL rates per hour or per unit, such as $2.44 per nominal hour at South Regional TAFE and up to $5.25 per enrolled hour at Federation TAFE. Published assessment times run from a few weeks up to 12 weeks for a full qualification.

Key takeaways

  • Each RTO sets and quotes its own RPL fee. The Queensland Government advises contacting more than one provider to compare process and fees.

  • Public TAFEs usually charge by the hour or by the unit. South Regional TAFE publishes $2.44 per nominal hour. Federation TAFE lists RPL rates of up to $5.25 per enrolled hour. The Gordon adds a $250 upfront fee.

  • Some providers price RPL like tuition. RMIT charges the standard tuition fee. Victoria University charges the standard rate to subsidised students and half of it to full-fee students.

  • Subsidised and concession rates apply only to eligible students. South Regional TAFE quotes restricted trade qualifications on application.

  • Gap training, translations, licences and skills assessments are usually extra.

  • Published assessment times: 4 to 6 weeks at South Regional TAFE, and up to 12 weeks for a full qualification at TAFE Queensland.

  • Skills assessments have their own fees and times. TRA's Migration Skills Assessment is $795 and generally takes up to 120 days. The ACS RPL pathway is $625 and takes 4 to 6 weeks.

  • An offer that needs no evidence, or promises a certificate in days, is a red flag.

How much does RPL cost in Australia?

There is no national RPL price. The fee depends on the provider, the units you apply for and your student category. Public TAFEs often charge by the hour or by the unit, so recognising a whole qualification costs more than recognising a few units.

The Queensland Government says there is a cost for RPL assessment, that costs vary between providers, and that you should contact more than one to compare their process and fees. In some cases financial help may be available.

These are examples from named providers. They are not averages. Subsidised and resident-only prices apply only to eligible students.

Provider

How RPL is priced

South Regional TAFE (Western Australia)

Its pages give two different figures, so confirm before you apply. The RPL page says $2.44 per nominal hour for RPL with a government subsidy. The FAQ says $35 per unit, capped at $1,000 per qualification. Fees are non-refundable and paid at enrolment. Class A and Class B restricted trade qualifications are quoted on application.

Federation TAFE (Victoria)

A rate per enrolled hour in each course. The subsidised RPL rate is the course's tuition rate, up to $5.25. The full-fee RPL rate is $5.25 in most courses. Examples are below.

Victoria University (Victoria)

The standard tuition rate for Skills First funded students, and 50% of the standard tuition rate for full-fee students. Credit transfers are free.

RMIT (Victoria)

The standard tuition fee for the courses where RPL is sought, for subsidised and full-fee students.

The Gordon (Victoria)

A $250 upfront fee to start, then a per-hour rate for each unit. Eligible students pay the standard or concession hourly rate. Other students pay a fee-for-service hourly rate set per course.

CDU TAFE (Northern Territory)

From $295 for eligible Northern Territory residents.

TAFE Queensland

Depends on the units recognised, the course fee structure and any assessment or training needed. It gives an approximate cost when you apply. There is no cost for RPL with higher education units.

TAFE NSW

Your course fee is adjusted for the units you receive RPL for. For Smart and Skilled students, the new fee is calculated under the Smart and Skilled Fee Administration Policy.

Trade Skills Australia (private RTO for trades)

$2,450 in two instalments of $1,225 AUD. This comes from a 2023 guide, so check the current price.

Your student category can change the price. The Gordon, for example, charges eligible students the standard or concession hourly rate and other students a fee-for-service rate set per course. Ask each provider for a price for your status.

What changes the price

  • Level and number of units. Hourly and per-unit rates mean more units cost more. TAFE Queensland says the cost depends on the number of units recognised.

  • Funding. Subsidised, concession and full-fee rates differ, and only eligible students get the lower ones.

  • Trade qualifications. South Regional TAFE quotes restricted trade qualifications on application.

  • Gap training. If your evidence does not cover every unit, you pay for training in the remaining units. TAFE Queensland counts any RPL assessment or training in the cost.

Example rates at one public TAFE

Federation TAFE publishes an RPL rate per enrolled hour for each course in its 2026 indicative fee schedule (November 2025 version). Your total depends on how many units are recognised. The last column is the most you would pay at the full-fee rate if every unit were recognised. We calculated it from the published rate and the nominal hours, so treat it as an illustration, not a quote. The schedule is for domestic students, and subsidy availability varies by course (Federation TAFE).

What does an RPL quote include, and what costs extra?

What a fee covers depends on the provider. RMIT says its RPL fee does not include any additional training you need to achieve a competency.

These items are often charged separately:

  • Gap training or course fees for any units that are not recognised

  • An upfront or administration fee at some providers, such as the $250 upfront fee at The Gordon

  • Translations of documents not in English, if your provider or assessing authority asks for them

  • A licence or registration application, if your trade needs one (Queensland Government)

Questions to ask before you pay:

  1. What is the total price in writing, and when is each payment due?

  2. Does it include certificate issue?

  3. How much is gap training per unit, and how many units might I need?

  4. What is the refund policy? Policies differ. South Regional TAFE says RPL fees are non-refundable, are paid at enrolment, and that an unsuccessful RPL counts as an enrolment. Trade Skills Australia says it does not offer refunds and issues a statement of attainment for the units you achieve.

  5. Does the RTO assess you itself, or outsource assessment? ASQA warns about outsourcing to unregulated third parties.

How long does RPL take?

Plan for several weeks to a few months in total. Times depend on the provider, the number of units and how complete your evidence is. These are published examples, not guarantees.

Provider

Published time

Source

TAFE Queensland

Acknowledges an application within 24 hours and interviews you within 5 business days. Then 10 business days for a single unit or cluster, 20 business days for multiple units, or 12 weeks for a full qualification, counted from enrolment.

South Regional TAFE (Western Australia)

4 to 6 weeks once you submit your application, longer if your evidence is not enough

Trade Skills Australia

As little as 4 weeks from accepted enrolment, depending on your availability and your referees

Time depends on your evidence. TAFE Queensland says assessment time depends on the complexity of the application and the amount of evidence supplied. South Regional TAFE says that if you cannot find old qualifications, verifying your skills may simply take a little more time.

The skills assessment that follows has its own timeline:

Authority

Fee

Published time

TRA Migration Skills Assessment

$795 (review $610)

Generally finalised within 120 days (TRA guidelines)

TRA Provisional Skills Assessment

$130 (review $130)

About 12 weeks after you submit complete documents. Qualifications that include RPL units are not accepted (TRA guidelines)

ACS RPL pathway

$625

4 to 6 weeks when no extra documents are requested (ACS)

VETASSESS, professional occupations

7 weeks. Trade times vary by TRA program (VETASSESS)

Engineers Australia

See the fees page

Standard applications generally take 15 weeks to be assigned to an assessor. That is not the time to an outcome (Engineers Australia).

What other costs come with an RPL pathway?

RPL fees do not include the steps that follow. Budget for these separately.

  • TRA skills assessment. The Migration Skills Assessment fee is $795, and a review is $610 (TRA guidelines, September 2025). The Provisional Skills Assessment is $130 (TRA PSA guidelines, May 2026). All TRA fees are in Australian dollars.

  • ACS RPL pathway. $625, payable when you start (ACS).

  • Other authorities. Engineers Australia, VETASSESS and others set their own fees. Check their current pages.

  • Translations. Some providers and authorities ask for certified translations of documents not in English. Check what yours requires.

  • Licences. Some occupations need a licence or registration before you can work, such as electricians in Queensland (Queensland Government). A licence is a separate application to the regulator.

  • Visa charges. These are separate from every item above. See RACC's visa fees page.

For how the steps fit together, read RPL for migration.

How do you compare quotes and spot prices that are too low?

Legitimate RPL takes assessor time. Reviewing evidence, running interviews and checking referees all cost money. Compare what each quote includes before you decide.

Common red flags:

  • No documents required, or only one form of ID

  • A certificate promised in days, or a guaranteed pass

  • The provider cannot name the RTO that issues the qualification

  • Pressure to pay in full before anyone reviews your evidence

Before you pay:

  1. Collect written quotes from at least two RTOs for the same qualification and your status.

  2. Check each RTO's code, registration and scope on training.gov.au.

  3. Compare what is included, not only the headline price.

  4. Keep your quote and evidence file.

ASQA can cancel a qualification that was issued without proper training and assessment. Read RPL scams and ASQA cancellations for more.

How RACC can help

RACC Australia is a registered migration and education agency in Melbourne (MARN 1572961). RACC is not an RTO and does not set RPL fees or issue qualifications.

A registered migration agent can check whether RPL is worth paying for in your pathway, which skills assessment follows, and what the whole journey will cost. Book a consultation before you pay an RTO.

This page is general information and not migration advice. Rules and fees change, and your outcome depends on your own circumstances.

Frequently asked questions

How much does RPL cost in Australia?

There is no national price. Each RTO sets its own fee. Public providers publish rates such as $2.44 per nominal hour at South Regional TAFE, up to $5.25 per enrolled hour at Federation TAFE, and the standard tuition fee at RMIT. The Gordon adds a $250 upfront fee. Get a written quote.

What is not included in an RPL quote?

Gap training or course fees for units that are not recognised are charged separately. RMIT says its RPL fee does not include any additional training. Some providers charge an upfront fee, such as $250 at The Gordon. Skills assessment fees, licence applications and visa charges are separate.

How long does RPL take?

Published assessment times range from 4 to 6 weeks at South Regional TAFE to up to 12 weeks for a full qualification at TAFE Queensland. Time depends on your evidence and the number of units, and gap training adds time. The skills assessment that follows has its own timeline.

Is RPL cheaper than studying the course?

TAFE Queensland says RPL can mean a qualification in less time and at a lower cost. Whether it is cheaper depends on the provider. RMIT charges the standard tuition fee for the courses where RPL is sought, so the fee saving can be small. Compare written quotes for RPL and for the course.

Do overseas applicants pay more for RPL?

It depends on the provider and your student category. The Gordon charges students who do not meet its eligibility criteria a fee-for-service hourly rate set per course. International students at The Gordon must still meet 20 scheduled contact hours a week even if RPL is granted. Ask for a price for your status in writing.

Do I get a refund if the assessment is unsuccessful?

It depends on the RTO. South Regional TAFE says RPL fees are non-refundable and paid at enrolment. Trade Skills Australia says it does not offer refunds and issues a statement of attainment for the units you achieved. Ask for the refund policy in writing before you pay.

What do skills assessments cost on top of RPL?

Fees are separate and set by each authority. TRA charges $795 for a Migration Skills Assessment and $130 for a Provisional Skills Assessment. ACS charges $625 for its RPL pathway. Check the authority's current guidelines.
