Subclass 190 Tasmanian Skilled Employment (TSE) Priority Roles
Last Update: 29 May 2026
If you are living and working in Tasmania, the Subclass 190 Tasmanian Skilled Employment (TSE) pathway offers a route to a permanent skilled nominated visa — provided your skills assessment is listed as a TSE Priority Occupation.
This page explains how priority roles work, which occupations are included, what caveats apply, and how the full occupation list is structured.
TSE Priority Occupation List — Full Table
The table below is sourced directly from Migration Tasmania and displays all occupations eligible for the Subclass 190 TSE Priority Occupation option. It shows:
-
The skills assessments required (eligible occupations column)
-
Examples of related roles within the same ANZSCO 3-digit group
-
Any notes and caveats that apply to specific occupations
Important: Not all occupations in each 3-digit ANZSCO group are listed. The examples column is illustrative, not exhaustive.
What Are the Subclass 190 TSE Priority Roles?
The Subclass 190 TSE Priority Roles are a defined list of ANZSCO occupations for which a valid skills assessment allows a skilled worker living in Tasmania to access the TSE Priority Occupation option under the Tasmanian Skilled Employment pathway for a Subclass 190 Skilled Nominated Visa.
To be eligible under the TSE Priority Occupation option, an applicant must:
-
Hold a valid skills assessment for an occupation listed in the TSE Priority Occupations column
-
Be working in a closely related role — one that falls within the same ANZSCO 3-digit group as their skills assessment
-
Meet all other minimum requirements for the 190 TSE pathway, including employment duration, salary thresholds, and residential requirements
This is distinct from the long-term employment option under the 190 TSE pathway, which does not require the occupation to appear on the priority roles list but requires a longer period of qualifying employment in Tasmania.
How the ANZSCO 3-Digit Group Rule Works
Under the Subclass 190 TSE pathway, "closely related" means the role you are working in falls within the same ANZSCO 3-digit occupational group as your skills assessment occupation — not necessarily the exact same occupation code.
For example, a person with a skills assessment for Management Consultant (ANZSCO 224713) who is employed as an Economist (ANZSCO 224311) may still be eligible, because both occupations fall within ANZSCO group 224 (Information and Organisation Professionals).
This means:
-
Your job title does not need to exactly match your skills assessment occupation
-
Your role must sit within the same 3-digit ANZSCO group as your assessed occupation
-
Not all occupations in a 3-digit group are listed — the published list provides examples only
-
Additional occupational caveats published for specific occupations must also be satisfied
Minimum Requirements for the TSE Priority Occupation Options
To be eligible under the Priority Occupation option of the 190 TSE pathway, you must meet all of the following:
Employment Duration
-
At least 9 months of work in Tasmania in a role closely related to your skills assessment, or
-
At least 6 months if your skills assessment is for a teaching occupation (working in a school) or a health or allied health occupation
Skills Assessment
-
Your skills assessment must be listed as a TSE Priority Occupation
-
Your employment must meet any additional occupational caveats listed for your occupation
Hours and Salary
-
Employment must have averaged at least 20 hours per week over the qualifying period immediately before lodging your application
-
Salary must be at least $57,000 per year or $28.85 per hour (excluding overtime, penalties, bonuses, or casual loading)
Residency and Intent
-
You must currently be living in Tasmania and intend to continue living in Tasmania
-
Your dependants must not be living in another Australian state or territory — they must have moved and settled in Tasmania at least three months before you apply for nomination
-
You must genuinely intend to remain employed in Tasmania in your current industry for at least two years after nomination
Employer Requirements
-
Your employer must be a well-established business that has been actively operating in Tasmania for the past 12 months (unless longer caveats apply to your occupation)
-
Your pay and conditions must be equal to or better than those for Australian citizens or permanent residents
-
There must be a genuine, ongoing need for your role, including a minimum 12-month contract with at least three months remaining at the time you apply for nomination
-
Casual employment is allowed but must comply with the Fair Work Ombudsman's requirements
If Self-Employed or Contracting
-
A relevant skills assessment is required
-
At least 12 months of business activity in Tasmania is required

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Subclass 190 TSE Priority Occupation option?
The Subclass 190 TSE Priority Occupation option is a pathway under the Tasmanian Skilled Employment (TSE) stream that allows skilled workers living and working in Tasmania to apply for state nomination for a permanent Subclass 190 Skilled Nominated Visa. It requires a valid skills assessment for an occupation listed on the TSE Priority Occupations list, and at least 9 months of qualifying employment in Tasmania (or 6 months for health, allied health, and teaching occupations working in a school).
Does my job title need to exactly match my skills assessment occupation?
No — your job title does not need to exactly match your assessed occupation. Under the 190 TSE pathway, your role must fall within the same ANZSCO 3-digit group as your skills assessment occupation. For example, a person assessed as a Management Consultant who is employed as an Economist may still be eligible because both occupations sit within ANZSCO group 224.
What happens if my occupation is not on the TSE Priority Occupation list?
If your occupation is not listed as a TSE Priority Occupation, you may still be eligible under the long-term employment option of the 190 TSE pathway, provided your occupation is on the Department of Home Affairs skilled occupation list for Subclass 190. The long-term employment option requires at least 15 months of qualifying employment in Tasmania immediately before applying, and all other standard minimum requirements must be met.
What is the minimum salary required for the 190 TSE pathway?
The minimum salary for the 190 TSE pathway is $57,000 per year or $28.85 per hour. This threshold excludes overtime, penalties, bonuses, and casual loading. Salary levels also determine which priority attributes a candidate can claim when ranking their Registration of Interest.
Can casual employees apply under the 190 TSE pathway?
Yes, casual employment is allowed under the 190 TSE pathway. However, casual employment must comply with the Fair Work Ombudsman's National Employment Standards, and pay and conditions must be equal to or better than those that would apply to an Australian citizen or permanent resident in a comparable role.
Do my dependants need to be living in Tasmania when I apply?
Yes. Your dependants must not be living in another Australian state or territory at the time of application. They must have moved and settled in Tasmania at least three months before you apply for nomination.
What is the difference between the Subclass 190 and Subclass 491 TSE pathways?
The Subclass 190 Skilled Nominated Visa is a permanent visa, while the Subclass 491 Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa is a provisional visa valid for up to five years. Nomination from Tasmania for a Subclass 190 visa provides five additional points toward the Department of Home Affairs points test, whereas nomination for a Subclass 491 visa provides 15 additional points. Candidates nominated for a Subclass 491 visa will not be renominated for a Subclass 190 visa in the future. The Subclass 491 visa provides a pathway to permanent residency through the Subclass 191 Permanent Residence (Skilled Regional) visa after three years.
Can I be nominated for both a Subclass 491 and Subclass 190 visa?
No. Candidates who have been nominated for a Subclass 491 Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa will not be renominated for a permanent Subclass 190 Skilled Nominated visa in the future.
