The Tasmania Skilled Migration Program 2025-26 is now open, offering skilled workers and graduates multiple pathways to live and work in Tasmania. Both the permanent Subclass 190 Visa and the provisional Subclass 491 Visa provide state nomination points and a pathway to permanent residency, making Tasmania an attractive destination for skilled migrants.
Onshore Pathways for Skilled Workers and Graduates
Subclass 190 – Skilled Nominated Visa
The Subclass 190 Visa is a permanent visa that allows you to live and work in Tasmania. Nomination from Tasmania provides 5 additional points towards the Department of Home Affairs’ points test (minimum 65 points required)
If nominated, you must agree to live in Tasmania for at least two years after nomination approval.
Subclass 491 – Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa
The Subclass 491 Visa allows you to live and work in Tasmania for up to five years and provides 15 additional points towards the points test. After living and working in Tasmania for three years, you may be eligible to apply for permanent residency through the Subclass 191 Visa.
Department of Home Affairs Requirements
To qualify for Tasmania’s state nomination, you must meet the Department of Home Affairs (DOHA) criteria:
✅ Be under 45 years of age
✅ Have a nominated occupation on the relevant Skilled Occupation List
✅ Hold a valid positive skills assessment
✅ Have at least Competent English
✅ Score a minimum of 65 points on the DOHA points test
You must also meet Tasmania’s specific nomination requirements.
Overseas applicants can apply for a Tasmanian nomination under the same visa categories. Nomination adds extra points (5 for 190, 15 for 491) and requires a commitment to live in Tasmania for two years after nomination.
190 – Health or Education Sector Job Offer Pathway
Valid skills assessment in health, allied health, or education (ANZSCO 3-digit group)
Formal job offer in Tasmania related to your skills assessment
Employer must be a well-established Tasmanian business (12 months of operation minimum)
Wages must meet local market rates and employment must be genuine and ongoing.
491 – Invitation-Only Overseas Skilled Occupation Profiles
Must receive a SkillSelect invitation
Must not have lived in any other Australian state in the last 12 months
Provide evidence of research into the Tasmanian job market, including:
Networking with employers or recruiters (e.g., emails or LinkedIn)
Communication with professional associations
Research of at least two relevant job vacancies in the last six months
Statement on how your skills match job requirements
Must show financial capacity to support yourself and dependents for six months

Eligibility and Requirements
To be eligible for the Tasmania state nomination:
Must be under 45 years old.
Occupation on the eligible skilled list.
Positive skills assessment.
Competent English.
At least 65 points on the Department of Home Affairs points test.
Meet Tasmanian nomination criteria, including employment, residency, and integrity requirements.
